January 10: Saint William of Bourges

Saint William of Bourges

History

Even though Saint William was born into a rich, important family, his uncle – St. Peter the Hermit – taught him that being rich and famous generally causes a lot of problems. (Yes, even back in the 12th century, before there was television and Internet!). What William learned to love instead was worshiping God and studying. He loved to go to Mass and spent as much time praying in church as he could. When he grew up, he became a monk, and then the abbot (leader) of his monastery, and then archbishop.

Activity

Do you have a favorite movie, song or television show? Many of us do, but we don’t often think about the actors, singers and musicians who entertain us. They could be facing a lot of trouble because of their fame and fortune, which is what Peter the Hermit warned his nephew William about. Today, pick a famous person to pray for, and ask God to help that person honor the Lord and stay out of trouble.

Saint William of Bourges, pray for us!
