History
Paschal became pope in 817. At the
time, the emperor of Rome was a Christian and respected Pope Paschal’s
authority. But when the emperor’s son, Lothair, took over in 823, everything
changed. Lothair tried to intervene in a crime by having his own trial instead
of allowing Paschal to deal with it according to Church law. Paschal tried to
correct him, but instead Lothair passed some laws restricting the pope’s
authority.
Activity
These days, we are once again
seeing national governments and international bodies like the United Nations trying to interfere with Church teaching. Today, pray that God’s Church will
win these conflicts, and that all Catholics will come to know and understand why
the Catholic way is the right way.
